Chloramphenicol eye ointment is a medication used to treat bacterial eye infections. It contains the antibiotic chloramphenicol, which works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Chloramphenicol eye ointment is available over the counter or by prescription. To use chloramphenicol eye ointment, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Tilt your head back and look upward. Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a pouch. Squeeze a small amount of ointment into the pouch. Close your eye and gently massage your eyelid. Wipe away any excess ointment from around your eye. Chloramphenicol eye ointment is usually used three to four times a day for 7 to 10 days. Do not use more than the recommended amount or use it for longer than directed by your doctor.
